Personally, I don’t read gap-fillers because I like the unknowns in various episodes. I don’t want every little bit of mystery sucked out of the show, every last detail explained away. While I agree that some canon events were under-written, I’d rather see under-writing than over-writing. I’ve had a few collections of gap-fillers recommended to ( Read more... )

"I'd love to write an epic post-513 story, but I still haven't thought of an actually story yet."

And I'd love for you to write one! Really, there just can't be enough epic post-513 stories. Who needs a story? BRIAN AND JUSTIN IN LOVE FOREVER. That's a story! Start there, and see what happens. :)

"and lately, I think I've written a few sort-of gapfillers... more like little fics set within canon... things that could have happened (like some PWP)"

I don't mind reading them if they're something someone wrote/posted recently and there's only one or two of them. It's when someone has a huge collection of them spanning entire seasons (or in one case, the entire series) that I can't tackle. I'd rather keep all my gaps where the show put them.

"I've also been trying to write some close to canon AUs, but that takes waaaay more planning (fore the longer ones) to make sure everything makes sense and all the actions of the characters make sense to who they are, both in the AU and true to the original."I put it somewhere between "a real ( ... )

I used to prefer post-513 stories by far. I still like them, but possibly because I have read so many, I have developed a taste for what-if fictions. However, I like what-ifs that take into account the full canon, what we know about the character's full development, which on the whole I didn't find as inconsistent as many fans think.

So for example there is no bashing, or Ethan does not go to the Rage party, or Brian doesn't get cancer, or there is no bomb, etc., but the core issues of the Brian/Justin relationship are all still the same and therefore still need to be faced. I like those stories.

I prefer the word "flexible." :) This show was a gift to fanfic writers in so many ways.

Those stories all sound really interesting! I read one where there was no bomb and I had my doubts that it would all come together but it was brilliant.

Thanks for your thoughts. ♥

"I think it's because you have the new aspects all over again, the initial flirt, the excitement!"

That's what I love too -- both in reading and writing them. :)

Have you read the two what-if's I suggested above? I know there's a bunch more good ones but I'm drawing a blank ATM. I adore them because I'm in love with the idea of infinite possibilities within a story. I generally like the directions that the show took things but there were so many other ways things could have gone and I'm curious about how those stories would have turned out.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I have read the entire journal of Kachelofen (including the kid!fic, which I actually liked because of the angst!).
Valediction I wasn't sure If I had read it (I know it's a death!fic), judging from your description probably not, but but but my heart will probably break, so I don't have the courage (you have no idea how much I cry in these!)

Well, I can tell you from personal experience that the best time to read it is NOT when you are six months pregnant. I went through an entire box of tissues and was a red-eyed, red-nosed mess for days!

But the writing is exquisite and the love, amazing.

My favorite fic is future fic- actually that is all that I write. I find taking a future vision of what I'd like to see happen but keeping the characters in "character" is key to success. Drabbles are fun to read but I often don't because I actually like the long involved story. I want back story and full out fleshed stories. I do write one shots but I prefer the long stories.

I prefer longer stories too, but it seems like there's a lot more drabbles and ficlets being written these days than anything else.

I love future fics because you can play with the characters more. You can help them continue to grow and change as they get older but yes, keeping them fundamentally in character at the same time is key. It's a fine line. I have a future fic that I've been working on for months now. It takes place in 2021 and it's about 30k words so far. It still needs work but hopefully it will be ready to be beta'd soon.

2021, awesome! That's much further into the future than most writers are willing to take us. :)

A difficult question, one, I don't have an answer for. Maybe because for me, coming into a fandom for the first time when I had watched QAF for a few times, all was new and exciting and seeing the whole spectrum of stories of every kind.... I picked them out like standing at an endless buffet and found highlights in any category. Over the time it changed, but maybe that's because my sight of QAF changed. In the beginning I had my focus on the end and any story that " made it better" was welcomed. Over the time I became more critical for some storylines in between and started to appreciate "what if's" more and more. And for AU's: very often I look for them when I need some not so dark, not so dramatical BJ and love the new verse they are playing in ( ... )

Zombie QaF? LoL, okay, I have to admit that I would totally read that. And why am I surprised that such a thing has been written? Oh, who am I kidding -- I bet about twenty QaF zombie AUs have been written! This fandom is nothing if not prolific.

I'm not sure what sort of stories you're talking about. If you mean stories that are all about Brian and Justin but not so much the other characters, I really enjoy those because Brian and Justin were the reason I fell in love with the show. I don't think I would have watched past the first season if not for them.
