Hannah recoiled as she saw the body of their-- Hogwarts', Hufflepuff's-- champion bent, sprawled awkwardly across the muddy pitch. Open and fathomless, like the Great Lake, Cedric's eyes were blank. Dead.
As a herd, students shuffled back to the Castle, trying to comprehend a death of one of their own, the best and brightest of them all. Hannah's gaze sought out those that mattered most, assuring herself that all would be alright. All lived and breathed.
Eventually hers found Vincent's, even though they had not spoken more than two words outside of class in a little over a year. Blue met brown and Hannah received the second blow of the day. Involuntarily, she flinched. Hurt, perhaps, even more by the fact that the person she had known disappeared from even her view. Blank. Dead. Gone.
As hard as he tried, he could not get away from her. Always present. Always aware. Vincent found himself a moth, drawn to Hannah's light. If they were not careful, if he flew too close, the fire would consume them both. If Potter's words were true, and he had no reason to disbelieve the Gryffindork, all would be changing by summer's end. The flame would turn into an inferno.
They passed one another, silent among the restless crowd. Knowing full well all who mattered would be lost in their own thoughts, paying no mind to the others around them, Vincent reached out and caught Hannah's hand, squeezing slightly.
Her head tilted back, a bit further than she remembered, searching his gaze for a second time. The Vince she once knew was back, though the brown orbs remained guarded. What did he have to hide from her? Still, he had reached out for her without the aid of shadows. That was what she needed.
Hannah squeezed back.
