My family was never in *too* much danger because we live on the NNW side of Houston, pretty far from the coast and away from any areas at high risk for flooding. However, our area did still get hit by the heavy rain and hurricane-force winds, which are nothing to be taken lightly. In our case, the wind was a big issue because the neighborhood my ( Read more... )

Thanks! ♥ I wasn't too worried about the family, but I was really scared about our house. That was a near miss! /o\

Oh man so scary. ;_; My younger cousins had to evacuate and are staying with my parents in Dallas right now. So glad that that tree didn't fall the other way. o.o

I know right. o_o That was a close call. Do your cousins live in Galveston or just close to the coast? Do they know anything about their house, etc.?

I'm so glad you guys are all right. Even if the hurricane didn't exactly hit our area, tornadoes are still possible and very scary.

Yeah, I know. Someone here was like, "If your family wasn't in Galveston, they should've had nothing to worry about." I tried to explain to them that flooding isn't the only problem associated with hurricanes. Unfortunately that's what's now associated with hurricanes because of Katrina, I guess.

I'm glad the wind was blowing in the other direction, most definitely.

You'll probably see it on Facebook, but my college newspaper didn't even so much as MENTION the hurricane. I was so pissed off I couldn't see in front of me for like 10 minutes. And you know, when the NY blackout happened a few years back, that was all over the news in Houston. When it snows an unusual amount or floods in the Northeast, that's always reported on in Houston. Like, wtf?

I haven't looked at the Tartan, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it wasn't mentioned either. As far as the real news media goes, I've been curious how much has been mentioned outside of TX/LA. Ike-related headlines show up every now & then on newsmap, but they are rarely among the most popularly read. It's disappointing.
