He doesn’t like it when his brother gets like this. It’s the game, he keeps telling himself, he’s only like this when he’s playing the game. But Mokuba can’t help but worry sometimes. The brother he adores vanishes the second a card deck appears. Fades away the instant he steps up to the battlefield. It’s like everything he’s known is trapped inside some sort of barrier, where even his cheers from the sidelines do not persuade the normal reflexive smile.
No, this card game was something addictive. It had become like a drug to Seto; his one anchor of control.
But Mokuba gave him this; he alone placed this seed of bloodlust inside his brother.
Back then he hadn’t thought that a few cards could do this.
They had been an innocent enough gift from one child to another; they had meant to be a distraction from the work, a sliver of fun in Seto’s life. But it had become an obsession. Mokuba had realised the morning he’d walked into Seto’s room to see hundreds of cards spread across the floor. He’d wanted to say something then but the smile on his brothers’ face had halted him. After all hadn’t this been their purpose?
Now, years later, the cards had become like an extra entity; blue eyes white dragon now more of a pet than a mere slice of plastic. It scared Mokuba, the way Seto played with his pets, the way he boasted and challenged others taunting them with defeat. That had been fine as well, Mokuba supposed, until Seto lost his title; until some unknown schoolboy had stripped that part of his brother away.
Mokuba often wondered what was most important to Seto. The victories, the game, the thrill of the hunt, or was it the chance for once not to be known for his money for a while; for that chance to misplace all that anger and just to not be a millionaire anymore?
Or maybe it was because the cards were a gift.
A gift from the only person Seto allowed himself to care about.
