Auron slunk out into the snow, cautiously stepping over his slumbering companions.
He drew away from the small hollow where his new summoner lay in a rare undisturbed sleep. It had been over ten years since he had last braved the slopes of Mount Gagazet. Ten years since everything had drifted away from him like the snowflakes that slipped between his fingers and melted on the warm sword hilt.
He slid his sword tip down into the crisp snow and lent against it staring out into the horizon.

Even now he remembers the exact spot as clearly as if their imprints still marked the snow. Gagazet was only one step away from Zanarkand, the city of stars; an eerie tribute to the dead.

This was the spot where Jecht had seen his last sunset.
They’d sat here together talking, planning what they would do after the fall of Sin; what the future held for the two guardians. Jecht had lost faith in ever returning to his Zanarkand and Aurons resolve had been wavering. Braska had been the only one strong enough to insist they continue and see this through.

Auron hadn’t thought that far ahead, Jecht was doing his best to keep their spirits up by prying into which Blitzball team he should join.
In many ways Jecht was already gone then, his usual fire had burnt down to embers, he had been drained but unwilling to sleep. His talk of Blitzball was one they’d had several times before, a practiced reassurance for the final stretch.
Auron had offered his sake to Jecht and had smiled in respect as Jecht waved it away, stating that he’d come this far without a drink and a promise was a promise. Auron had corked the bottle and set it down without sampling any himself.
Jecht had been so serious.

Jecht didn’t suit serious; being the level headed one had always been Aurons purpose.
But words failed him as Jecht had leant over and smacked him firmly across the back.
“Well at least I still have you to bother after all this.” He’d half smiled grazing his fingers over his goatee.
Auron had said nothing.

A decade was a long time to reflect. Hindsight is painful. Maybe had he known what was ahead he’d have done it, initiated something on their last night together. Said something touching, heartfelt, anything.
Or maybe he’d have filled that gap with a method Jecht was more comfortable with, with action instead of explanation. He may not have had the words, but he knew the motions, he knew that for once being the one to seek him out, fall into his embrace would have said more than a hundred well crafted words ever could. To have been able to kiss him just once in a way that said I need you, instead of I want you.
But he had never been the one to step forward and he’d left Jecht alone watching the sunset on their final day together.

Regrets hold him now, wishing that then he’d taken the chance to prove to Jecht how much he’d meant to him back then. Instead he’s proved it every day since, raising Jecht’s son, fighting his way back to him, but it’s not enough and it’ll never be able to replace what went unspoken.

He pulls the sword free from the mountains icy grip and throws it heavily across his shoulder. It should be easy to say it now, but it’s not. He sighs as more familiar words fall from his lips.

“I’m sorry.”
