You are lucky to have such a reported memory and I'm sure your grandmother's response was very wise. As you know this is consistent with Buddhist thought. Scorsese’s film Kundun, about the Dalai Lama, shows him as a two year old child in the 1930's recalling memories of his past life.

I wouldn't assume this is a common experience. Usually I'm a rationalist but some things are mysterious and can't be explained away.
