Local politics gets dirty

A repost of my column from here.Anthony Marco is not a Nazi. He doesn’t like Nazis. He doesn’t think being a Catholic or Lutheran or Buddhist is the same thing as being a Nazi, and he doesn’t think that veterans who fought Hitler were “messed up” or wasting their time. Yet, this is what the governing Liberal Party of Ontario would have us believe ( Read more... )

I don't know...I mean, I don't think the guy is actually a Nazi sympathizer, but the quote itself is pretty darn sketchy. It does appear to me to suggest that he feels he can't condemn people having the beliefs of Naziism as their religion, which isn't the same as being a Nazi sympathizer, but absolutely does suggest that Marco believes in cultural relativism and the unassailability of religion to a dangerous degree. I'd be reluctant to vote for him.

Well, in the whole thing, he's just rambling about how you can't change people's minds and used a very charged example. It was in the context of thinking that burning Korans would do nothing to stop terrorism.

I would not vote for him, either, for a variety of reasons, but it's a deliberate lie to say he "condones" Nazism and doesn't think you should fight it.

Yeah, in the context of 'he's a politician', it show poor judgement to have used Nazism as his example. In context of 'blog posting about the merits of free speech', well, it's still a poor choice of words, but people choose words poorly sometimes. It doesn't make him a Nazi-apologist.

... it's kind of depressing that political candidates have to be people who've been choosing their words carefully for *their whole lives*, in the modern age, or they will inevitably be subject to these kinds of smears. *sigh*

Didja already publish it? I noticed a couple of minor errors.

I think you meant Marco when you said "alternative to Hudak." and "is worst kind of" seems to be missing a the.

It's a nice article though! Shame on those Liberals.

Interesting article. I fear, however, that it may be wasted on the majority of Ontarians who probably don't know who Jonathan Swift was.

As for Marco, I think he may have been asking for it by invoking Godwin's Law in the first place. And he calls himself a blogger?
