Will trade nipple tassels for 02 handset

I am currently in the tedious process of switching networks from T-Mobile to 02 whilst retaining the same phone number. I have been told my number will work with the new SIM card as of tomorrow but have hit a wee snag - the menu on my phone offers a "Network selection" choice which includes 02 so I assumed it would be fine to use right away with

Yep, I have been with T-mobile myself for years and years but just over the last 5 months or so they have randomly decided to make it incredibly difficult to credit my phone.

You need to have your handset 'unlocked'. Any mobile phone shop should be able to do it for you for about a fiver tops.
