And for once, I don't mean me. That little baby in the icon? That's Thespe at three weeks old. She still looks like that, just much much bigger and fluffier now. Still with the mouth open though. See, I thought it was amazing that simplykimberly caught her in mid mew. I know better now. Far more amazing to catch her NOT mewing ( Read more... )

Two thoughts:
1) Build her a maze
2) Give her mice
Bonus points for putting the mice in the maze :)

It would take a lot of work, but interesting climbing structures where she can go up stairs on the wall, across the room on elevated paths, have fun hiding places, could help. I knew someone who built her cats an exercise wheel even and they thought that was fun.

The mice are probably a less practical suggestion, since it would be difficult to set it up so they could not escape into undesirable places in the house. Less destructive than mice but harder to acquire - mayflies. Our cats LOVE playing with mayflies when I can catch one and bring it in. Mayflies really loved to hang out in the chamomile I planted a couple of years ago, no idea why, but it made them relatively easy to catch.

Funny that you mention mayflies - there's been a couple of times that we've gotten katydids (HUGE brilliantly green ones too - they were lovely!) in the house and she went absolutely bonkers for them. Like "Hi Mom didja see me leap 7 feet straight up for a sitting position and I gotted it see?! Lookie mine pretty shiny omg there goes gotta go get it wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" insane. Like "here I am laying peacefully on the cou-HOLY SHIT WHY IS THESPE FLYING AT MY FACE! oh the katydid is on the wall above my head... " out of control insane. It was hilarious but not necessarily a long term sustainable solution :D

An exercise wheel has possibilities, I'd just need to find something to keep her interested.

Funny you mention... She has a Chili's bag right now that is shredded, torn, flat, and utterly useless to anyone but her. However, if you make any sort of motion in its direction that might be even vaguely threatening to dispose of it, she runs over and lays protectively on it. It is HER BAG.

At the risk of getting lynched... have you ever considered letting her outside? I had a spastic, intelligent cat, and letting him wander a bit (though only during the day while we were around to call him in) *really* helped him. He lived 'til a very happy 17 years old.

Maybe go to the pet store and get a few crickets?

Not as destructive as mice is they should get hidden before she gets them, and she's already proven she likes to hunt bugs...

Oh she does. She REALLY does. And invisible faeries. And dust bunnies. And toes. And shoelaces.

It's not a bad idea, especially in combination with some of the others. I just feel so badly for her because she's quite clearly asking for play, but I haven't figured out just yet what will do it for her.

She's had a few toys that she's *adored* but they all end up missing. (In the toilet, I'm pretty sure there's about a dozen glitterballs under our bed, under the fridge, you name it. If a small ball made out of tinsel can get there, I'm pretty sure there are some.)

Nah no lynching. Neither she nor her sister have ever in their lives been Outdoors (aside from being moved to and from a car to get from their birthplace to home or from home to the vet).

One day when Thes was in one of her "Pick me up and cuddle me in your arms until they fall off because I'm huge and heavy but so cute you can't resist and I'll purr at you" moods, I took her out into the back yard. (She loves to stare out the window or the screen door, so I thought she might like it.)

She didn't panic in the "omg flailing legs and claws and pain and reaking out cat someone please help before she kills me" kind of way, but she did huddle into me and started making these low concerned "mrow. Mrow. MROW. MROW!" noises. She made it really really clear that she Did Not Want To Be In The Outside Thanks.
