What I did with a bunch of mine cause I was at the library with no books handy was google the book and "first line" or go to amazon.com and look up the book hoping they had the "look in this book!" thing up, where I could transcribe the first line from.
But, it's your party- 5 is good, too, lol.
Ok, these are the ones I KNOW before I go looking up stuff.
2-Catcher in the Rye 3-Hitchhiker's Guide (I did one, too, but I did So Long and Thanks for All the Fish cause that's my favorite. Cause of Fenchurch, and the biscuit story. Oh man I love that story.)
what the hell is #1? I found some ancient book by Paul Clifford (of which that is only part of the 1st line, btw) and a collection of admittedly terrible short stories out of the Bulwer/Lytton Fiction Contests, but nothing I can imagine you liking.
See that's why i like number one (which is p.s. the only one i DIDN'T have to look up before i posted)...I like it because we've heard it so many times before and think it's totally overdone, but really it only starts one book ever....A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. When I was younger i thought that if they were to ever do a movie of it, I was totally who they should have picked to play Meg. And now i think they have done a movie (not that i've seen it), but they didn't call me so i'm kind of disappointed really.
Oh, a wrinkle in time. That's a good book. I read them too late, I think, when I was 19. Wrinkle and Wind in the Door are the only 2 I really got into. I did try, though.
They have that movie here at the library, but I think it's some unidentifiable child actress. Fooey, I say.
2 more just for funpurplewaves1April 23 2005, 16:14:31 UTC
Here's two more just for fun (and b/c i'm home and have my hard copies in front of me. well the one hard copy is...i could have sworn I had a copy of number 7 with me - since i think i own two copies of it anyway, but i can find neither. oh well.) Number 6 would be my favorite book ever and number seven is a very close second.
6. "Yes," said Tom bluntly, on opening the front door. "What d'you want?"
7. "The sun sets in the west (just about everyone knows that), but Sunset Towers faced east."

7-The Westing Game! YAY! I remember that being one of the first things we ever talked about, cause that's what your lj name is from. That was one of my #1 books in grade school, got me hooked on mysteries forever. Was the girl's name Turtle, or am I making that up? Whatever her name is she was my hero right up until Pride & Predjudice when Lizzie became my hero.

Yes the girl's name is Turtle, although her partner calls her Alice and her real name is Tabitha Ruth so they also call her T.R. at the end too. Now there's another book they should turn into a good movie. Maybe they will call us for parts in that one.
