I have had to do that with school a couple of times. You're right, it really is better to realize that you're not motivated, and get out before you hurt your transcripts/GPA. Unfortunately I had to learn that the hard way a few times.

Come to California! Maybe you'll be motivated here :). I hope things get better for you, whatever you decide.
