Umino Gurio was not lost. Not in the slightest. He had the handy-dandy map he had printed off the internet. He had his backpack, textbooks, pencils, laptop. He was not some out-of-sorts, giggling freshman.
Well, he was a freshman, but he wasn’t clumped together, practically hand-in-hand, with a big bunch of his friends. The fact his friends from junior high had run off with their boyfriends and even his friends from high school were computer engineers, not biotechnology engineers, was entirely irrelevant. He walked through the biology building alone, but knowing exactly where he was and where he was going.
The lab he had secured an undergraduate research position in was on the left, just after the elevation map of Gondwana and the glass cabinets of extra office supplies, but before the rows of refrigerators.
“Excuse me?”
There was one Russian woman, but she ignored him. “Hello?”
He wandered into the back room, where a plump young woman with a heavy perm examined a row of test tubes.
“Hello. I’m supposed to be working here?”
“Ah. I would train you, but I’m graduating in two months and have to work nonstop until then to finish my project, so I don’t have time to train you. Everyone’s at lab meeting.”
“Oh. Sorry to bother you,” he excused himself awkwardly.
Umino stood near the doorway, swaying back and forth a bit. Maybe he should come back another day. What were those machines for, anyway?
He started on the beakers in the to-be-washed tray beside the sink.
Eventually, a few people filed past him. Evidently the lab meeting was ending. They ignored him, not even accusing him of trespassing.
Then a whirlwind tore through. He was able to identify objectively: petite, child-like woman, with lab coat and glasses way too big for her. Then she leaped on him.
There was a blur where he caught: Shada, eccentric, graduate school student, genius, cra--eccentric. He blinked a few times and he was not in the lab, he was in the hospital and Shada was giving birth to their sixth child and he was completely lost, but maybe admitting that was okay after all.
