Sailor Moon, sm_monthly Dec 3 theme

Dec 03, 2006 11:35

Hi, I'm new here. This is probably my fault from reading too many backentries from October, plus being a hopeless OC writing all the time. 580 words (making it one of the longer things I've ever posted on lj). for sm_monthly

Title: Learning the Sword
Author: purplekitte
Theme: Shitennou--Sword
Genre: drama
Version: PGSM post-Last Act I suppose, but some anime continuity
Rating: PG-13 for language

"Are you sure this is a good idea?"

"Yes."

"I'd rather you gave me my gun back."

"What did we learn yesterday?"

"A sword is a melee weapon, a gun is not. Unless it's a semi. I have one of those somewhere. Can I go get it?"

"Kyoko, you're whining. Shin's not going to let us out of here until you give up and starting being willing to learn. And he said he wouldn't feed us. I think he under estimates your stubbornness with this timetable he has."

"The one of us not starving to death before I gave up? Probably. Well, this was my idea. It was my idea, right?"

"I think so."

"Fuck it, Jadeite, I'm going to cut off my own head."

"You run around hitting people with a crowbar all the time. Do you ever hit yourself with that?"

"No, of course not."

"Then you're already ahead. It's just a different balance, here. And sharp, of course."

"I love you, but I really am going to kill you."

"Not without a sword you're not. Not even you are up to a barehanded decapitation, and I know Bakene won't help you."

She swung the sword over to rest the flat on her shoulder, a bit too confident for having just picked it up. "Demonstrate, then. I don't want to spend to be stuck in here all day. Shin-san had Yukio steal my cigarettes," she pouted.

Yesterday really must have scared you more than we thought. You've nearly died before, but I've never known you to be this snappy, short-tempered, angry, or childish afterwards.

Jadeite swung his sword in a wide arc, making sure nothing was in the way of it. Nothing was. Kyoko had quieted and stood behind him, her dark eyes watching him intensely.

The sword felt natural to him, the way few other things in the world did. He had no memory of not knowing how to swordfight or of learning. He had few enough memories of when the Shitennou had been Prince Endymion's guards as it was.

His sword cut through the air, slashing, blocking, stabbing. He remembered practicing this pattern a thousand times. He had loved to practice by himself in the early morning, before the Guard was even up. In the afternoons he had practiced with his friends, the other Shitennou, and some knights and some high-ranked members of the Royal Guard.

He could remember so clearly: blocking Nephrite's sword to the side and kicking him right where the thigh muscle met knee, sending him to the ground. He said something and Kunzite, standing watching, starting laughing and after a minute Nephrite did too. What were we laughing about?

Jadeite's body continued to move through the most basic pattern of techniques he knew, used to teach raw beginners not to hack their own arms off, on its own accord. He had never taking up dancing, but it was probably a lot like this, the fluidity of motion, the sword as just an extension of his arm.

It took him quite a while to realize he was standing still, when he finished, so lost was he in the movement. He looked back to see Kyoko staring at him, openmouthed. "That was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," she whispered reverently. "Teach me."

Jadeite stepped behind her and reached over her shoulder to position the sword in front of her in the first block. He whispered in her ear, "You start like this."
