In the old days of Neptune, there was a very beautiful princess who many young noblemen across the whole solar system desired to marry. Her father knew she had no wish to marry, but to keep from offending every planet in the system he did as was traditional in those days and made an unbeatable challenge before one could ask for her hand.
He had constructed a great labyrinth. Many men entered, but they either stumbled out the entrance again, starving, days later or never returned. The king secretly hoped that someday someone would win his daughter’s heart and she would help him win the challenge.
The princess continued to scorn men and nothing changed until one day when the princess was newly returned from giving a concert on the harp to the royal women of Uranus. A mysterious young man arrived on Neptune to challenge the labyrinth. Challengers were rarer by then and their credentials given less scrutiny. The man’s garments were simple but of good material that indicated wealth.
He spoke with just a lilt of a Uranian accent, and though she openly showed him no favor, the princess had clearly met him before by the widening of her eyes when he first arrived.
The young man entered the labyrinth and, with a blast of magic few men in the entire system could boast, knocked down the wall in his way, before the darkness had swallowed him entirely.
Two days later the young man emerged from the exit of the maze. The princess ran over to him and yelled at him about how worried she had been that he might have died and why hadn’t he just let her be. The young man asked if she did not love him then, and she said that of course she did.
The princess embraced him, but in doing so his cap was dislodged, revealing long blonde locks. The man was not a man at all but the only daughter of the king of Uranus.
The young woman had won the challenge, so she and the princess were married. And they lived happily ever after.
