The plot bunnies attacked me this evening, so I decided to indulge them :) I've been obsessed with writing/drawing Gojyo-centric stuff lately, and this time I decided to write some young!Gojyo stuff. I think out of all of them, Gojyo is probably the most fucked up, but that's why we love him X

Absolutely. I figure he either stole them, got them off the 'wrong sort' of kids, or maybe from Jien? For some reason, I get the impression he was 8 when he started smoking, though I'm sticking to 12 in the fic because it sounds more solid. Besides, a kid down my road started when he was 8, stealing his Mom's cigarettes and lighter, and I don't think he has half as strong a reason to smoke as Gojyo does. I'm writing a fic right now examining Gojyo's relationship with cigarettes, so that might explain my standpoint a bit more :)

seems to me that part is also AU.
a child would NOT have thought of all the things
gojyo did ....

at 12, a kid could be smoking... but not the way gojyo was presented - in the anime (he looked terrified).

a hard-nosed kid would not have been terrified.
and if he was older, he wouldnt have allowed it to happen...

if i suspend that part, everything else hangs together nicely.

Uhh, I thought the anime for Saiyuki (not reload, the first one) was atrocious, and didn't watch beyond the first episode. In the manga, he's shown smoking whilst his Mom and Jien are in her bedroom, and he doesn't look much older than 12, or thereabouts. For some reason, I seem to think he's around 8 when his Mom gets offed, though I'm sticking with 12-ish because it's more consistent with the manga. Here, I'm taking my cue from directly after the manga's depiction of his Mom's death - he was terrified, but now he's gone into shock, and everything has taken on a surreal tinge. Emotionally, he's not functioning, and his exploration of his Mom's room is an emotional release of sorts for him, a way of dealing with the fallout in a constructive way. Note how he panicks the second his preconceptions are challenged when he finds his Dad's aftershave

I can tell you why you keep want to think he's 8. In the manga, I believe Hakkai is telling Goku and Sanzo the story, he says that Gojyo was 8 when his mom died. However, later in the manga, he's always 12 when it happened (it says 10 years ago, and since Gojyo is 22 he would have had to have been 12). I don't know if that was a misprint on TokyoPop's part, or if Minekura-sensei changed her mind. But that's probably why.

Personally, I like it :) I especially like the last line, it's like the first step down a new path for him.

As far as the smoking thing goes, I started when I was 13 (yeah, I know, what an idiot I was) so I can't really point any fingers ;) I too seem to remember Gojyo having been a smoker from a (very) young age. I can't say it seems odd to me, I mean, come on, it's Gojyo...had be been born into this world cigarette in mouth I wouldn't have been surprised *grins*

Your fic about Gojyo and smoking intrigues me, can't wait to read it.

It was basically the entire reason I wrote the story! Glad you like it though, if felt like writing a slightly AU twist into this one :)
