Oh this is excellent!! I love the way you've divided the themes and explored the notion of their bond on different levels. Each argument is so strong You've really captured the very nature of their relationship and, to me, what makes watching these two so compelling.

I adored the final section about the soul mates - the idea of a person split in two, finding each other and being stronger as one is not only a wonderful summing up but it describes them PERFECTLY.

I had all the emotions reading this. They have the ridiculously tangled and complex relationship but it what, ultimately, gives this show so much heart (and makes my heart swell and my eyes well up <3)

Yay, so glad you liked it! As soon as I saw your prompt, I had all kinds of thinky thoughts that needed to be explored :) I actually had examples from seasons 6 and 7 in my outline, but this thing got a bit long. I may do something with it later, though, since I have a few thoughts spinning off from this (including a more in-depth exploration of that last section!).

I feel more optimistic about the upcoming season too, having revisited all the reasons why the brothers really do keep each other human, and just how deep and powerful their love for each other has always been. Aw, what a wonderful way to look at it! The brothers have such a complicated relationship, but at its very core, it's all about love. I was really struck by the idea when I saw the prompt that they do keep each other human...in some ways. And in others they totally don't, but maybe that's not so bad. It's what makes them so interesting, after all!

Very nicely argued. :) I love the sense throughout that Sam and Dean are always able to provide each other with the opposing point of view - if one is despairing, the other can offer hope, if one is making poor decisions, the other can be the voice of reason. That they are able to listen to each other - usually - gives them so much more strength than the average closed-off hunter.

That's such a great way of putting it; they really are a balance for each other, aren't they? I think that could easy go to the "soul mates" argument since, if they are really two pieces of a whole, then together they reach an equilibrium. Love it :)

Very excellently explained thesis, you verbalized what I instinctively have always viewed as the heart of the show and why I am compelled to watch it.
