Had critique group last night look over my book proposal. Have I mentioned that this group is wonderful? I'm learning so much about my own writing, receiving and giving feedback

That's an incredible discovery to make, and to own. And it comes along in every memoir process :)

Your book sounds fantastic. I want to read it. And it sounds sellable, too!

In case you need it, there's a marvelous few pages about a (fictional) fat lady in Robertson Davies' book, World of Wonders. It talks about how she bathed, and how her act went in the freak show.

Yay! So exciting!

Here's a thing: I struggled with critical theory for a long time, because it wasn't extant when I last left school (I'm old). A prof turned me on to berry's Beginning Theory, and all was made clear: pick a point of view and defend from it. Excellent, quick read did more for my "academic cred" than years of academia.

I think this new premise is brilliant. If you say you'll do a reading in Portland that might actually get me there this summer.
