I first read The Lord of the Rings when I was 14, over a period of months (it was in one volume, hard-back, and massively daunting) in 1995-1996. My entire adolescence was isolating -- there's a reason I loved the Obernewtyn books ;) I actually went right from reading Ashling into the LotR books.

As for the LotR omnibus, it was that exact same edition, with what I referred to as "Bible pages" (the thing was bigger than most bibles in my house, anyway) and the red ribbon bookmark. In all honestly, I would never recommend that people read it in the one volume unless they really love reading and fantasy.
