I graduated today.

I has a degree. Officially. With a spiffy seal-affixed parchment/paper/document that I can frame and put on my wall, if I had space to put it on my wall. Also I was in the top 5% of my division. I has an award/commendation thingy.

Now I just need to finish my Honours, and then I can work on a career.

happy pur ish happy, unisa

Congratulations! Good luck completing the rest of your Honours, erm, whatever that is.

Thank joo. ^^

I'm not sure America has an equivalent, actually (was just reading up on it and went 'boh?' at your system).

It's basically an extra year of study in a discipline, focusing on research, in which the student has to write a thesis on a topic of their choice. You need a certain GPA level just to apply for it (or at least in my discipline, you do). My degree is a BA in writing and creative communication: my Honours specialises in the same thing (my thesis has to be half creative product, in my case a fantasy novel, and half theory, in which I pretty much have to justify my creative product. I'm focusing on modern fantasy re: Tolkien and mythology).

It's technically still considered undergraduate, since when you pass you get a sort-of addendum specifying 'Honours' to your original degree. Most people use it as a bridge between their undergraduate degree and a PhD or similar postgrad research degrees, buuuut ... I don't think I'll be going that far. Don't think I want to be an academic for life ( ... )

Ah, I see. In the US you usually do honors degrees while still in undergraduate, without the extra year. At least, that's what it's like around here.

Ohhh, okay.

I think I actually read that, but it was saying that Honors was defined as part of the undergraduate degree and not a degree unto itself, so I figured it didn't count as an equivalent?

... Yeah, I'm not sure where that logic came from either. XD

Congrats! :) And Negrek is right, in the US you can do honors degrees while still in undergraduate. I had a few friends that did that. I would too, but I have a job, so I wasn't sure if I'll be able to handle that.

I'm guessing you can't do it part-time, then--over two years? That's a bugger. Maybe you could defer and pick it up when you have some extra time? Or apply for study leave from your work, if they have it?

And thanks. ^^

Pretty much you do the honors work while you're doing your undergraduate. Yeah, it's a bit confusing, the US education. XD

And there's really no study leave at my uni. I could just quit my job, but I need the money and cause of the bad economy at the US, don't know if I'll be able to find another job at this moment. Meh, whatever.
