I went to the Super Goodwill with picklepopsicle today but only scored a couple of shirts. We did, however, work on getting closer to our apparent goal of eating at every Subway in Ocala

It had several little plots...and alot of backstory you just have to figure out. I LOVED it, but I'd prefer the stage (operetta) version to the movie (musical) version.
I'm of a similar RENT opinion. I think that Jonathan Larson's AIDS induced death as the show opened help to propell the success of the show. La Boheme (the opera on which RENT is based) is a silly story, too. I felt it was one of the more accomplished of the "movie based on musical" genre in terms of transition from stage to screen. Though I guess I can't back up that claim too much since I've never seen the stage version of RENT, but I've seen many a musical, and I liked what they did in terms of presentation.
I agree--the presentation was great (set, costumes), and I thought the acting and singing were fabulous for the most part. But it was the "plot" and songs that bothered me the most--both were often without a point and quite dumb at times.
I saw RENT on Broadway a few years ago, and absolutely loved it. I was really excited for the movie to come out, but found myself very disappointed. It just didn't capture the magic, or something. At a few points, I was actually BORED.
well the songs are WAAAAAY better on the Broadway version for one, they're performed quite a bit differently in spots, but i guess if you truly didn't like the songs too much at all in the movie adaptation, might not like 'em on the Broadway one either. as for the plot, guess it never really bothered me. *shrug*
i didn't HATE the Movie version, but i definitely didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the 2 times i saw it live.
