Claire had left Adam's as soon as she explained what was going on, and as soon as she had calmed down enough to see clearly through her mess of tears. She was angry, but at no one but herself. Because she knew that she had caused this, she had brought trouble upon herself, like she always did. She was a stupid, stupid little girl, and she was about to lose the one person she cared the most about. And she wasn't going to let tht happen. She couldn't, because she knew that she couldn't go without him. She ran all the way to the clock tower barefoot and in clothes that weren't appropriate for the chilly weather, but didn't feel anything except the panic that was setting in.

Can't lose him, can't let him go.She repeated the thought over and over in her head as a way of steeling herself and calming herself for what she knew was about to come, and didn't let herself slow down or pause until she had blurred up the steps and was standing atop the tower. Breathing heavily and gasping for air, she leaned over and rested the palms of her hands ( ... )

He heard her coming up the stairs, heard her talking, but didn't turn around. If he had to look at her, something might crack. He might lose that resolve. She always had that effect on him. Could he resent her for it? Maybe. He didn't know. Nothing was clear anymore. Not that it ever was to begin with. But things never got any easier.

"You never listen. Do you know how many times I've said that, Claire? How many times we've had to have the same conversation, over and over again. Because you never listen. You never learn. I don't think you want to." He used the same low, soft-spoken tone he usually talked in, only there was something cold and harsh about his words this time.

He took a long pause, and drew in a deep breath before speaking again. "I'm tired, Claire. I'm just tired."

She gulped loudly, and took a step back. He wasn't looking at her. And she knew him so well now, knew well enough to know that he had probably already made up his mind. Was he going to leave? She could feel both her heart and stomach sinking, feel her emotions start to get the better of her. But she tried to do what she thought an adult would do in the situation, and bit down on her lip hard enough so that she wouldn't say anything else ( ... )

He didn't answer immediately. He didn't want to answer, because to say no would be lying, and to say yes would be more of this, the vicious cycle. And he knew he would do it, because despite whatever else he tried to say he did care, and wanted her to love and accept him. But at what price? Was the price ever too high?

"I love you." He breathed. He glanced at her in his peripheral vision. It was painful, just like he knew it would be. Idiot. "Can I just... be alone? For awhile?"

Her breath caught in her throat and she dumbly nodded. What had she done? She had ruined everything. Her fingers reached up to brush across his cheek and she bit down on her lip until blood was pooling in her mouth. She wanted to say something, wanted to continue talking, to continue pleading. But he looked so...hurt, so upset. And she had caused it. "I love you." She muttered in a weak voice, a fingertip running lightly across his lips ( ... )
