He wasn't supposed to be here. He wasn't supposed to be here. Why had he gone through all the trouble of letting him go just to have him show up here weeks later? To find out that he wasn't dead at all, but-- To Charles, being a Chevalier had long since stopped being a privilege and become a state worse than death. And now Riku was stuck with it just like him, because of him. Maybe he thought it was fun now, but Charles knew too well that that couldn't last.
And what if Riku's being here was his fault too? He'd never wanted him to end up here, and yet part of him always had -- Of all things he could have requested from the gods, he'd asked for another moth specimen just in case Riku would eventually show up. And even though he truly had let that selfish wish go, that same part of him, as much as he wanted to suppress it, was now overjoyed to see him again.
Charles felt his heart jump and his breath catch in the back of his throat for a moment when he finally caught sight of Riku at the base of the clock tower. He stopped in his tracks for a few seconds and averted his eyes, biting his lip as he tried to summon the courage to continue.
He finally stopped a few steps away from him, tugging at his ribbon uncomfortably, eyes still refusing to make direct contact with his friend's.
"All right," he said flatly, a poor excuse for a greeting, especially for a meeting that meant as much as this.
