Reno had spent every moment since he'd heard Elena was free fussing and fidgeting, trying to enact his plan as well and as quickly as he could... which turned out to be rather slowly. He STILL wasn't ready, but... well, fuck it. He needed to see her. And she needed to see him, it seemed...

He'd really fucked this one up. But not beyond recognition. It could still be fixed. Hopefully, he would be able to do just that, this very night. The thought of his thoughtlessness driving Elena away, just as they finally had the chance to be together... it killed him. Drove an iron bar right through his heart.

He didn't simply trudge through the snow, on the way to Elena's house... he jogged. He ran. He couldn't possibly get there fast enough, but he had to try. He had to be there. He needed to see her so badly... it hurt.

Finally, though... he arrived. Shaking the snow from his hair, he gave a swift knock on the door, all too eager to see the person who dwelt within.

There were only a few ways Reno could ever fuck it up beyond recognition, none of which he had done as of yet, thankfully. Things hadn't changed, other than the little pieces of loneliness that had settled in, the little bitter parts that questioned her worth. Even so, the second he had said he was coming over, she realized that she couldn't deny him anything. Did it make her weaker or stronger for it, she wondered.

Did it matter in the end?

The second she heard the knock on the door she was throwing it open, nearly tearing it off the hinges in her haste. He was there. There, in front of her, no glass between them, no obstacles, nothing, nothing to separate them anymore.

"Reno," she whispered, then smiled, smiled so much that it hurt. "You came..."

For an instant, he couldn't speak; his heart rose to his throat, as he wondered how he could ever keep Elena waiting. It was shameful... it ought to be criminal. But... a moment later, that hang-up passed. It didn't matter. Not now. He was here now. And he didn't intend to leave her hanging.

"Elena...," he said, fully intending to say something more; however, nothing came. Instead, he smiled at her, broadly and affectionately, and wrapped his arms around her in a warm, protective embrace.

It couldn't reach them here. None of it. Not Jenova, not Hojo, not the worries of this place or any other. They were safe. In that one moment, they were truly safe.

He... he was touching her. He was warm and affectionate and beautiful and smelled like Reno, her Reno, the Reno she hadn't seen in ages. There was a shuddering little breath in her throat, something that hurt, that needed, that wanted freedom, and she whispered his name once again to ease it. It felt good to say it, but even better to say it as her, not as Jenova's puppet, not as Turk teammate, not as Shinra employee, but as just little plain Elena who slept with a nightlight on when she could help it.

She pulled back, not enough to break the embrace of his arms, but to lean backwards against them. Her palms found the sides of his face, thumbs brushing the red lines under his eyes, her heart pounding in her chest. Okay. Okay. This was that moment she wanted, she imagined, she--

"IloveyouReno."

Well, that didn't come out in the same romantic way that she had hoped. Her cheeks flared red, her eyes going wide, before she started to drop her hands away. She wondered if he could even understand the slurred jumbled rush of words.
