Why am I so lucky?

This past week, a classmate from Copenhagen's father died.  He was in a motorcycle accident.  When I read the Newzjunky report, the accident was scarily similar to Dad's accident back in 2007.

Man driving a motorcycle safely within the speed limits.  Driver of the oncoming vehicle does not see the motorcyclist.  Driver of truck turns left into ( Read more... )

Connecticut doesn't have a helmet law either and I feel exactly the way you do. While I was in grad school at Hartt the past few summers it would make me so angry. Just remember that there's no control of who stays and who leaves. But, either way, it's never easy to deal with.

Ugh. I just don't understand why people wouldn't put on a helmet in the 1st place! You can't honestly believe that your skull is as safe on a motorcycle as it is when contained in a 4-wheel vehicle.

I wonder how many states do not have laws regarding helmet use? Something that needs to be changed, in my opinion.

Thanks for the last words, they are very comforting.

You are very lucky and very blessed that your father is still with you. I hate motorcycles. I don't talk about this often, so most people don't know, but when I was 11 my older brother was killed in a motorcycle accident. He WAS wearing a helmet, and it was another situation similar to this, except the driver clipped my brother and his friend and they both went flying off the bike. Helmets do help a ton, but anyone who rides a motorcycle takes a huge risk every time they are out on the bike. They can be doing everything right and something can go wrong. I do agree with you that it is so stupid for people to NOT take that extra precautionand put a helmet on. If you really feel you should start a campaign for it, I say by all means do it. It is a very serious and potentially life saving precaution that people are foolish to not be doing even if it isn't mandatory.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. I can't even begin to imagine. :(
I completely agree that cyclists take a risk every time they ride but also I think that other motorists are not necessarily paying enough attention and sharing the road. Everyone should take care and work to keep each other safe.
