Rant

This kind of upsets me.  "I don't like shopping at Wal-Mart because I disagree with their labor practices and all their products are made overseas and they're not moving toward environmentally-positive practices, but I NEED my frozen pizzas and other junk food, so I still shop there"

Ugh.

I'm encountering the same problem. Walmart in Michigan is still relatively a new thing, and I would much rather shop at Meijer because it is a Michigan company (still a large big-box company, I realize this). However, Walmart is the norm in Oklahoma, and for most things, they are cheaper. There's a local chain called Homeland which is the Spartan store- not as nice as Busch's, something along the lines of Kroger- but I imagine they'll have similar prices that are more expensive than Walmart. It's hard, because Walmart does have the lure of lower prices and with my situation (not knowing if I'll have a job right away), their prices are very attractive ( ... )

I totally agree with you that Wal-Mart is a necessary evil in OK and I think your plan is good. You're doing the best you can for yourself and the country and the planet as you can.

It frustrates me when people say stuff like "Oh yeah, well I shop at Wal-Mart even though I don't need to and I know it's killing our economy and treats its employees like CRAP, but at least it's cheap! I love saving money!"

Grr... Saving money is all well and good, but not at the expense of so many other things!

Right. My mom was so anti-Walmart because of the way they treat their employees (she was in the Communications Workers Union so the fact they didn't unionize didn't sit well with her), but now that she lives up north and is feeling the economic pinch, she definitely shops there more. Believe me, I think I'll see if Target has good prices before I shop at Walmart.
