Here is the best argument, maybe the only one needed, to support the birth of every possible child, wanted or not, no matter how horribly conceived or damaged or unprivileged:  Every single one of those human lives could turn out to be awesome.  A bad start doesn't mean shit when it comes to whether or not you can love and be loved, succeed at ( Read more... )

Not directly relevant, but kinda yeah: Have you read Judith Jarvis Thompson on abortion? There's a bit in on minimally decent Samaritanism that I think is pretty good.

I have, actually! She's excellent -- one of the few who hits on the logic of it very well, I think. MDS is a great concept.

Nice lady, too. She did a talk at the APA a few years back (the one where I got volunteered into chairing a nightmare of a session). (Seriously, why does anybody let philosophers write schedules? Zero time between talks, no control on how long the response lasts...)

I like the bit about Henry Fonda's cool touch on the forehead.
