I learned two important things at Super Xtreme Yoga Class last night:

One has to do with mudras.  One of the coolest thing about this particular Yoga class is the "monk forms" - the traditional kung fu we do to "warm up" for the Yoga.  (The sick thing is, this Yoga actually does merit using kung fu to warm up.)  Three of the monk forms were ( Read more... )

polyphasic, nifty things, tai chi

Hey, I didn't know you were taking taiji! What style?

Er, to answer the question I just asked, I have no idea what this type of Yoga is actually called. Unless there's a Shaolin version! I'll ask.

Warren Ellis speaketh from his LJ! It's worth reading.

I'm studying at Sifu Bow Sim Mark's school. The Chinese Wushu Research Institute. Started last month. Right now I'm doing "combined tai chi". To be honest, I don't know much about the differences in the styles ("simplified" is for children and old folk, "combined" is the olympic style(?)), but it IS being taught as a martial art. (I love how it's like, (::gentle motion gentle motion, push::) "okay, now "grasp the bird's tail", and what you're doing here is shifting your opponent's arm to where you can break his elbow with just a little extension ( ... )

Heh, you mirror my thoughts exactly. My Sifu, Tom Smith, also teaches damn near everything, and I have a hard as hell time not grabbing it up all at once. (In the year I've been there, I've taken on three weapons, plus the bad-ass versions of yoga & sitting meditation he teaches, in addition to the Taiji!) Though you're Chinese Whushu and I'm Shaolin Temple affiliated, which I think gives you more of a competition slant and me more of a meditative one...I think.

It is really hard to be patient for how long it takes to learn this stuff, but it's also well worth it. I wouldn't give up what I've learned for anything.

(My favorite part about it is the same as yours! Beautiful flowy movement...beautiful flowery name...and eviscerate the motherfucker. ;)
