"Cassidy, now's our chance!" Caroline whispered as she ran into her sisters room.

"He fell asleep finally?!" Cassidy asked as she jumped up from her bed where she had been reading Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway".

"Yes!" Caroline said and giggled. "Oh, this is going to be so good!"
"I know! But he'll be so mad!" Cassidy replied.
"Oh, who gives a rats bum!" Caroline said as she took her twins hand and they tiptoed downstairs. They stopped at Stephen's office door that adjourned to their mommy's home office, but they were hardly ever in their own offices at the same time. Actually, they were hardly home at the same time full stop. Not that it bothered the redheaded sisters, they knew their Mommy wasn't happy with grumpy old Stephen anyway hence why they were about to be pranksters.
Cassidy pushed open the door as quietly as she could and peeked her head inside. Seeing Stephen collapsed in his leather arm chair a few steps away from his wood desk she looked over her shoulder deviously at her twin. "Ready?"
"Hells yeas!" Caroline replied and followed her sister into the room, they walked ever so quietly over to their step-father who didn't act at all like a step-father should. Caroline was already trying to stop herself from giggling as she pulled out four darts from her pocket and loaded her Skylanders Giants Trigger Gun as quietly as possible, whilst Cassidy held her Nerf Super Soaker Water gun, filled to the brim, at the ready to strike.
"On three." Cassidy said.
Caroline nodded. "1, 2, 3..."
"RIGGER RIGGER, PULL THE TRIGGER!" They chorused as loudly as their thirteen year old voices could handle as they fired both their toys.
Caroline aimed for Stephen's chest and stomach area of his body, it looked very un-moving and almost as if he were dead, especially with his glass of scotch in his small glass resting brilliantly steady in his left hand on his upper left thigh. Cassidy's water gun shot in the same direction, and straight at his face too.
Stephen's eyes snapped open widely, mouth falling open in a gasp, as he instantly jumped up from his chair. "What the bloody heck do you think you devils think you're doing?!" he roared, eyes stone cold as he glared down at them, unsteady on his drunken legs.
Both twins began cackling with laughter. "You looked quite dead sitting there so we thought we should bring you back to life!" Cassidy laughingly said.
"Hence the rigger rigger pun." Caroline said, also laughingly. They had known for a while now that once a person was dead they were pronounced as being in rigor mortis, and just last night Cassidy had come up with the brilliant idea to do what they had just done because Stephen always looked quite lifeless when passed out unmoving in his armchair.
Stephen growled. "You think you're clever and funny, but the two of you are nothing but annoying nuisances! My marriage with your mother would be so much better if the two of you weren't around to forever stuff it up!"
"No, your marriage with our Mom is stuffed up because you're a mean old drunk!" Caroline roared back.
"Yeah! You don't treat her like she should be treated!" Cassidy yelled.
"She deserves to be treated like royalty, like a Queen, that's what she is to us! We love her, all of her, even her faults because you know what no one on this Earth is perfect!" Caroline added, arms crossed in front of her, as she defended her Mommy to this person who supposedly loved their Mommy. "You're nothing but an evil devil, not us or our Mom, you!"
"What she said!" Cassidy said, always backing down in confronting situations leaving the fancy words up to her sister.
"Oh, I cannot wait to tell your Mother all about this! Maybe she'll finally agree with my boarding school idea!" Stephen slurred as he began making his way out of the room.
The girls laughed loudly. "Good luck with that!" Caroline said, and continued. "If anything she'll be divorcing your ass!" she was not one to swear, but it seemed only fitting in this moment.
Stephen stopped in his steps. "Oh, you're so lucky I'm not like my Father because the two of you would be getting this fist to shut you up!" he said, tone serious and angry, as he rolled his hand into said fist and held it up in front of them to see.
Cassidy stepped a foot back and swallowed hard suddenly quite nervous, but Caroline was not. She wasn't going to back down to this stupid drunk. She stepped forward. "If you did, I'd be able to take you down. I do Karate and Kick Boxing every weekend and take down bigger men than you, and with you in the state you are, it wouldn't be hard."
Stephen just laughed. "Keep dreaming, stupid girl." he replied before turning back around and heading out the door.
Caroline and Cassidy followed him as he made his way downstairs, and watched as he grabbed his blazer he had thrown precariously over the wooden banister and began shrugging it on just as the front door opened. Large beaming smiles appeared on their faces and it was returned with a same size smile from their Mommy.
"Mommy's home!" Cassidy yelled excitedly, always the kid at heart, as she barreled down the staircase pushing Stephen aside to hug her mother. "I'm so glad you're home!"
"So am I, bobbsey." Miranda replied. She looked up just in time to see Stephen steady himself from where he'd fallen against the banister. "Where are you off to at this hour?" she asked him, frowning, not at all happy he was leaving just as she was arriving home from a busy work week.
"Anywhere but here." Stephen mumbled.
"I'm sorry, I don't think I heard you properly?" Miranda instantly said, voice firm.
"Nothing. I'm going out to the bar down the road to get a drink." Stephen replied.
"Don't you think you've had enough?" Miranda questioned her husband for the third time that night.
Stephen scoffed. "Telling me what to do now, Miranda? How lovely."
Miranda set her jaw, and snapped her mouth closed from saying anything further to him in front of the girls. She never started anything in front of them. That's not what she wants her girls to see, her dysfunctional and unhappy marriage; they could remain ignorant for the time being.
"Why not instead of questioning me question your daughters here and let them explain to you how they nearly caused me to have a heart attack." Stephen said and with that walked passed Miranda and shut the heavy door behind him.
Miranda directed her eyes to her daughters, and sighed softly. "I told you two to stop pranking your step-father." she said softly as they started down the hall towards the kitchen.
"Why do you call him our step-father when he certainly doesn't act like one?" Caroline asked.
"Look, it's very..." Miranda sighed again. "It's complicated, sweethearts. Our marriage is...." she trailed off. "I'm not sure it's going very well at the moment."
Caroline and Cassidy instantly saw the sad look on their Mommy's face. They quickly ran to either side of the Editor and hugged her tightly. "No matter what, you will always have us here to love you!" they chorused.
Miranda smiled as tears welled in her eyes. She kissed both her sweet hearted daughters on their foreheads. "Oh, I love you both so so much. More than you'll ever know." she whispered as she too held them close tightly.
"We know you haven't been happy with Stephen, Mommy." Cassidy started and looked over at her twin to continue.
Caroline nodded, and smiled at her twin before looked up at her Mom who was looking down at them surprised and curious. "But we think we know who would make you extremely happy."
Miranda arched an eyebrow. "Oh?" she asked, wondering who on earth they thought could be a perfect match for her. There was only one person it could be, and she would never get said persons heart, and her daughters would never think of said person as a romantic companion for her.
"Andy." Cassidy simply said.
"Wait... what?" Miranda questioned wondering how on earth her daughters would know of her feelings for the younger brunette who she knew she'd never have a chance in the world with.
"We were talking to her earlier, and she let something slip, about how you made her feel." Caroline continued. "I asked her how she enjoyed the benefit the other night, and she said it was so much fun, and that when she saw you coming down the steps in the dress you were wearing her heart literally stopped, before starting again a milk a minute. She said she knew in that moment that her heart had been taken."
"Then she realised what she had said, blushed and was all skittish and nervous like a scared puppy before mumbling words never to repeat this to your Mom" and a rushed goodbye and left as quickly as she could." Cassidy said.
"What?" Miranda said and shook her head. "Girls, I know you absolutely love and enjoy playing pranks on every one, but this... what you just said... it's not funny to me, and I'm sure Andrea wouldn't think so either."
The twins smiled lovingly up at their Mommy who was refusing to believe what they had just told her.
"We're being serious, Mommy." Cassidy whispered and hugged the Editor impossibly tighter.
"The way she looked... she loves you, Mommy." Caroline also whispered.
"They're being completely honest, and are one hundred percent correct."
All three Priestly's jumped at the unexpected voice behind them. They looked up and saw one Andrea 'Andy' Sachs standing in the kitchen door way.
"I'm sorry, I didn't meant to startle you, and I really know I shouldn't have come down here, but I heard you talking and I... well.. I couldn't control my legs." Andy explained as she felt her heart beat ever faster as the blue eyes of her boss, usually cold, annoyed, and distance, connected with hers to find a surprisingly warm and pleasant gaze.
Miranda shook her head as she swallowed hard. Her heart was beating just as quickly as the brunette's. "No, don't be silly. Please, come on in!" she said brightly, her smile reaching her eyes, and held out her hand.
The girls beamed also. "Andy!" they chorused happily and they too held out their hands to tug the assistant and who they knew would soon to be step-mother into the embrace. "Our first family hug!" Caroline said excitedly.
Both older women swallowed before looking at each other, albeit nervously, but Miranda squashed down her fears of getting her heart broken once again, and let herself just be happy for the time being. No matter what she would try her best to make some kind of relationship work with Andrea. She cupped the brunette woman's right cheek, and smiled. "Welcome to the family?!" she said with an arched eyebrow.
Andy laughed heartily as tears welled in her eyes and started to fall down her cheeks. "I never thought you'd say those words." she whispered.
"Oh, my darling." Miranda whispered, and leaned forward to capture Andrea's mouth. It was a soft, tentative kiss, it was a kiss that held lots of emotion and promises.
FIN.
