State of the Pets

Anubis' recovery has been far longer than expected, but I think we are finally there.  His coat is getting softer, I haven't seen blood in his stool for a few days, and though he still isn't excited to eat his breakfast, he is back to loving dinner with great leaping enthusiasm.

Leo's dental work went wonderfully, and the poor boy must have been ( Read more... )

They may not have been dumped. they could have been taken from someone, or even a breeder. I have been reading about a lot of 'dog rescues' on the pet law lists lately. Some are taken for vaild reasons, a lot aren't. Its possible the dogs you saw could have come from a ahow breeder, or a commercial kennel.

I asked about their stories. A couple were surrendered because the owners had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Several were surrendered because the owner's couldn't afford to keep them. One sweet, overweight girl was surrendered by an old lady who lived in a trailer (A GSD living in a trailer!) and couldn't afford to keep feeding her. The rest were left behind when a home foreclosed and the owners didn't see fit to bring their animals along or find it another home. I found one online that wasn't at the clinic but was fostered by the same organization who was taken from their owner. It had a seriously deformed leg due to a broken growth plate while it was a pup and was horrifically underweight. The rescue is asking for donations so they can have the $2000 surgery done to fix the leg. I don't know about the rest of the US, but the rescues in CA are far to overburdened right now to be taking dogs that don't need to be taken.

Yes. And yes. It just goes to show the state of the economy and how it is affecting pets.

It also points to a conviction I have regarding desiring a specific breed and rescuing: I have now seen every breed and color of rabbit, cat, and dog I have ever dreamed of owning... in a shelter. If I ever land a job as a K-9 handler, I understand that I'll be purchasing from a breeder in Germany, and I understand why, but other than that, I will only ever rescue for the rest of my life.

I get so depressed about this, and I know it helps exactly nothing.

Me, too. I keep taking inventory of my resources over and over to see if there is something more I can do. I have 7 rescued animals now. I have no money, no yard, and no regular blocks of time I can commit. Gah!

Poor Anubis. I'm sure in time he'll find ways to convince other dogs just how great he is to know.

I hope so! The poor guy, in spite of everything, has never shown the first sign of aggression, and he still won't give up trying to be every doggy's bestest friend.
