Feets HURT

I've got a shin splint. Right anterior, to be precise (pain on the upper outside portion of my shin, soft tissue, associating with a single line along the muscle--probably a tear). Some reading on the nature of the pain in my leg and in my feet (I have arch strain) shows that I need to stretch more, take some anti-inflammatory medicine ( ( Read more... )

dickens fair, pain, whine

I hate shin splints with a burning(sic) passion.

I can show you stretches to Prevent them that I do, but once you have them, the best thing to do is wait, and as mentioned, stay off them as much as possible. If you're lucky, you can dance as little* as possible this weekend and they'll be better by the next one.

*really like no dancing at all.

Evil, evil shin splints. Hate them, hate them I do.

My track coach railed against them in High School. Stretching is good to prevent them. IIRC, they are micro-tears in muscles and so simply need to heal. You have an ace in your hand though. I suspect walking with kids is much better (or much less bad) than dancing with regards to this. So you can do plenty of that instead . (I'm quick to point out that, that doesn't relieve other people of the responsiblity of helping with kids as well).

Prop yourself on the couch and have your fiance bring you stuff from the kitchen. Everytime she protests, go "ow ow shin splints, shin splints..."

Okay, so fix number one for shin splints: tap your foot. Tap while listening to music. Tap on one side for as long as you can, then switch to the other foot. Keep switching back and forth for a whole song.

You can do it in the car on your way to the Cow Palace. It warms up and strengthens the front of the shin so that your calf muscle doesn't get as pushy about snapping your shin in half.

As for the arches, I've had good luck with Pro-Foot foam arch inserts. They're cheap, and work better ~for me~ than anything else I've found. Available at Longs, Rite-Aid, and some WalGreens.

Hang in there. Be kind to your feet. You're not a crazy Irish dancer like me who's already been down this path in the off season.

Also, take ibuprofen every 6 hours, at least 400 mg., until you feel completely better. The consistency matters to keeping the inflammation down.

I also found that eating bananna's was helpful for me with the same issue. Somehow, the potassium seemed to help. not sure why. otherwise ya, you got it pretty much one the nose. Try and stay off of it as much as possible, and use some arnica oil with pepermint, rosemary, hyssop, and eucalyptus oils or herbs in a bath to soak. Make sure it's almost more then you can stand hot too. After soaking in that, some of your symptoms should be releived. Helped me when I had those things! Good luck and take care! See ya in a fortnight if I actually make it over to Fezzies. I have been trying, just not made it yet.
