Eat at Angeline's

I've eaten New Orleans food at Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen twice now, after positive word-of-mouth from friends, and want to pass the word-of-mouth along.

As some of y'all may not know, I am actually from Louisiana, as are both sides of my family. I'm very picky about "Cajun" food (most New Orleans-style cuisine isn't actually Cajun), as I ( Read more... )

Have I suggested that you come eat at Nola yet? have been there twice for Google-Tandberg dinners now, and it is very, VERY tasty. (their seafood etouffee with giant prawns is awesome!)

Looks good, but also looks very fusion-y. Lots of Asian and California-cuisine ingredients and dishes. Angeline's is more pure Louisiana, although there are a blackened-ahi salad and other California elements to the food there, too. I like plain old Louisiana food sometimes. No boudin at Nola, and all their po'boys come with aioli or portabello mushrooms or something. Feh, kids today.

I gotta ask - do they have any veggie options?

Before I turned coat, I really enjoyed cajun food. I know the idea of vegetarian cajun food is a farce, but it's worth a query.

Here's their menu... purchasemonkey November 28 2006, 01:07:47 UTC
The link above leads to their site, including their menu. Basically, some appetizers and a grilled vegetable muffuletta (deli sandwich with olive spread, basically). You might be able to ask for vegetarian options; red beans and rice, for example, is often basically vegetarian with some sausage or ham added, and can be made veggie. Call them and ask ( ... )

It looks like 'Wild Mushroom Jambalaya' might be veggie friendly.

It's Berkeley, I'm sure they have veggie options or they would have been run out years ago.

Yet another reason to come back to the dark side, but then again one can never trust a turn coat. Look at Benedict Arnold! Although you could have a breakfast option named after you...hmm...

Actually, they're new; they took over the Long Life Noodle House space, vacant for a few years.

purchasemonkey, thanks for the review. The bf and I nearly stopped in a couple weeks ago, but because we were in a hurry we went to Beckett's, where I had some sense of what the service would be like (and how well it could be hurried, if needed). Angeline's would be a good thing to try after work, sounds like....

I'm glad you posted this. I have passed the place a couple times, but haven't eaten there yet. I have been meaning to ask you about it but it kept slipping my mind.

Bought a takeout "bowl" of the gumbo, which is 2x gthistle-sized bowls (hurray for leftovers). I haven't much range for comparison, but it's certainly hearty, warm, satisfying food, without being too heavy. Also, I liked the amount of spice: clearing my poor sinuses without murdering my taste buds = gold star. Thanks again for your review.
