From the moment she'd put on her dress to the moment Jake's car pulled into the grassy area along the private drive that was jammed full of cars in a makeshift event parking lot, Caroline had felt excitedly on edge. Part of that was their seriously late arrival - courtesy of Jake trying to talk her out of it (and her dress) after Billy decided to ( Read more... )

Bella grinned and bumped Jake's arm. "Come on, you'll get a kick out of watching me try to walk in these." He'd seen her try to walk in tennis shoes, scarily the same rules applied.

"I'm surprised they managed to even get you in those," Jake replied, though it took a moment before he managed to keep from scowling after Edward and Caroline.

"It was kind of an ordeal," she admitted, hooking her arm in his as she tried to avoid tripping on her dress. "Honestly I was probably just as surprised to hear you were coming - and bringing a guest of your own."

"The invite did say I could," he replied, not sure what to make of that comment. "You thought I'd come alone?"

"Seth had said there were complications there, but since no one had really heard from you and you weren't replying whenever I tried..."

Bella wasn't certain how to explain her weirdly complicated thoughts there. Some part of her felt like Jake was hers and now he had brought someone as his date to her wedding. It was all too surreal.

Of course Seth had said something and the eye roll at least made up from the sudden feeling of guilt that washed over him.

"It was complicated," he said slowly, glancing down at her. It was strange seeing her like this, knowing she'd just gotten married and nothing would ever be the same again. Then again, he'd known that part for a long time already. "And you know, it didn't help that I was five years in the future. That kind of makes communications all weird."

Which so wasn't an explanation, but he didn't feel like telling her that he'd been outright ignoring her. Not when he was finding it harder and harder to remember why.

"Right, the weird time thing." She'd known that, but it was hard to remember when it wasn't smacking her in the face with the reminder that even if it had only been months for her, it could have been ages for him and there she went reaching her arms around him for another hug. "God, I've missed you."

He chuckled and hugged her back, making sure she stayed on her feet. "Are you sure?" he asked. "Looking at all this, you should have been too busy to miss me."

"Alice took care of all this," Bella told him, letting his arms warm her like he always had. "I could never have managed planning it all."

"I was thinking it was a bit more... grand scale than you would have gone for," he agreed, looking amused. "So how many times did you consider eloping?"

If this was more than a year ago, there would have been an invitation for her to elope with him.

"A hundred at least," she said, thinking this was a very abnormal conversation for Jake. "But I don't regret it, the ceremony was so amazing."

He wasn't going to say he was sorry he missed it, not when he wasn't. "So no aisle incidents?" he checked.

"Not one," she confirmed, leaning back to look way up at him. "So...spill. Tell me about this girl you brought home with you." It was weirdly awkward to ask, but she found she really wanted to know.

It was beyond awkward as Jake had done his best to keep them both separate. It didn't go well talking to Caroline about Bella, and he wasn't convinced he wanted to tell Bella about Caroline. Like they weren't supposed to exist in the same world and he suddenly felt uncomfortable when he thought of what Caroline and Edward might be talking about right now.

He bit his lip, but told himself he was being stupid. "She's amazing. We've been dating for over a year now. It was our anniversary just before I graduated. Which seems insane because if you'd asked me back then, I wouldn't have thought it'd be possible and now I can't imagine not being with her."

"A year?" That she hadn't expected. Especially not from the girl he'd brought. "I never would've guessed she was your type." Or was that jealousy burning in the pit of her stomach at hearing Jacob talking so happily about someone else?

"Yeah, me neither. You know, considering she's a vampire," Jake agreed, he laughed softly to himself and somehow this had him feeling a little better about being here. "Who'd have thought we'd ever get to have that in common, huh?"
