You wouldn't know it now, but I used to be quite the aquarium buff. I had up to 4 tanks once, and mainly had tropical fish until a huge tank of them were unfairly killed by my father as a punishment. After that, I stayed with cold freshwater ( Read more... )

my dad tIt ook my sisters cat and gave it to a pet shop, She never forgavehim for it. he was was too cheep to get her fixed, it think.
Most of my fish have lived for way more than a year,
I had goldfish that lived for about 8 years till the power strip failed, whenn I was out of town.
Ther shop sounds amazing. There was a place in silver spring near barbarian books that had koy like that thay oy could feed for a quarter.
Would like to go to a place like that again.
I am planing on setting up my 135 tank some time soon

Just When I Thought... anonymous January 30 2008, 09:02:25 UTC
my opinion of your father couldn't sink lower... there it goes and drops again. What kind of monster kills a kid's pets as punishment? Really. I do mean really...

Wayii...! >.<

But it is funny (odd), places like that. I remember a dirt mall/farmer's market in Maryland back in the 80s that came to mind while I was reading about your wet pets place. Weird kind of magic in those out of the way mystery shops. It's strange, but I almost look forward to finding them. I kind of miss straying off the beaten paths and finding myself pondering these places and people, my imagination taking the bit of logic between its teeth and carrying me to that infuriatingly elusive feeling that I'm on the verge of stumbling into something. Different.

Thanks for the memory.

Well, here's the short timeline of how he killed my fish:

  1. My punishment as a child was to "take away my lights." My parents knew I was afraid of the dark, and my room was pitch black at night, so this was an effective punishment (I have scattered memories of being in what was essentially a sensory deprivation environment, slowly going mad with fear).
  2. Fish tanks have lights. So does the heater thermostat.
  3. My father took those, too.
  4. It was winter, and my fish tank was under a leaky window
  5. My father also kept the house cold to save electricity and gas
  6. When I woke up the next morning, there was a film of ice on the top of the tank. The themometer didn't go lower than 50, so I don't know how cold the water got.
  7. Tropical fish are fussy when it comes to heat
  8. Most of my tank died within a day or two.
  9. Except the goldfish and a few 3-spot gouramis
  10. My wailing laments were met with, "You shouldn't have [whatever I was being punished for, probably something related to schoolwork], or your fish would still be alive." Later he changed it to, " ( ... )

i think by your description that this is the shop the ex and i purchased some of our odder things from, back before we transferred to illinois (the armpit of the world.)

three things stick out: the industrial-pool thing, the proprietor who thought my ex was an utter idiot (smart man) and the gar that I always told my son I'd feed him to if he tapped on the glass.....
