1) There are always fanboys/girs there who have to turn it in to a pissing contest to prove that they are the one fan who is the bestest and knows the most about just everything

I'd pick "interesting" over "scary." Mac's true talent with the Ducks was fed by Teemu. If he can be on a line with a scorer like Stempniak, they might just be a force. I'd love to see that.
I don't avoid them all, but if they don't have a full time moderator minding civility and friendliness, they tend to suck. There's at least one forum I belong to I can think of that fits that mold.
Yes, I understand how important, almost necessary, it is for you to keep things very, very simple.
Ugh - another thing that happened in that thread at the Ducks forum that really bugged me: when the trade was officially announced, someone politely and curiously asked about this Doug Weight fellow we've just acquired, and a few people immediately jumped down their throat. They could have just given his position, listed his stats, history, etc., but they had to get all Superfanbois on the poor person and commence with the "how could you not know who he is!?" eyerolling. One person even wrote something like "you need to pay more attention to the rest of the league outside of the Ducks."
Um, no, asshole. They need to pay attention to precisely the things that interest them and nothing more. You need to stop being such a self-righteous know-it-all and maybe consider just answering a friendly question with a friendly fucking reply.
I used to read the Mets group on Usenet. While there was a lot of good discussion, there was one doom and gloom naysayer who insisted he was the biggest fan, that if only he could run the team, he could make all the right decisions and win the World Series, and that anyone who disagreed with him was, at best, mentally retarded.
I seriously do not get the people who aren't capable of keeping things friendly and fun. Sometimes I want to scream at dorks like your Mets douchebag...the competition is on the court, the ice, the field, not in the friggin' stands. Other times I just resign myself and cave. Okay, you are just teh biggest fan evah. You win the contest. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm more distracted by actually enjoying the bleeping game.
Movie geeks are equally as bad. Believe it or not, knowing what flavor of salsa Steven Spielberg put on a taco he ate at lunch on November 13, 1983 doesn't make you a winner, buster. Think about it.
