Yesterday Night I watched Citizen Kane. The movie was made in 1941. Multimillionaire newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane dies alone in his extravagant mansion, Xanadu, speaking a single word: "Rosebud". There's also this movie that comes on HBO about Welles' life during the making of this movie. He was more similar to Guru Dutt that way... his films were misunderstood, and his vision was often scoffed at.

To me Guru Dutt was close to Frank Capra. Both of them always had a story to tell. On the other hand Raj Kapoor (pre mera naam joker) and Orson Welles made movies that were a pure critism towards the society at that time.

Capra's style, and the way he used to set up his shots and then linger on were unique, and veryu very effective as storytelling techniques, whereas Gurudutt's cinematic approach was more matte, I think. But you're right in that we can not deny that both men had a story that necessitated their technique.
