But it wouldn't make much sense here because Summer kinda starts in May in Portugal. :D And ends in the end of September! Bwahaha!

It's got nothing to do with that, it's something we've been celebrating almost forever now. To celebrate fertility from the beginning and since there is pretty much no night whatsoever (the sun never sets) on midsummer's eve it's the time when all the supernatural creatures come out.

It's from when we worshipped the nordic Gods.
