I loved Scott when I was a young teenager, although I've not read them since. 14 year old me loved - and wept buckets over - The Bride of Lammermoor, though I suspect the star-crossed lovers would just annoy me now. I remember liking Waverley, too, but I think my favourite was Old Mortality, whose hero is pleasingly moderate in an age of fanatics and extremists. I liked The Heart of Midlothian, too. Despite being utterly obsessed with medieval history, I never warmed as much to his medieval novels, perhaps because even then, I was aware of the inaccuracies. I loved the jousting scene in Ivanhoe, though.
That's two votes for Old Mortality, which I hadn't heard of before... I've ordered a copy. It sounds much more my cup of tea than The Bride of Lammermoor!
