I've never thought much of the gardens, although I love the fernery. I wish W.Bankes had left the house alone and it had remained a 17th century one. Did you see they've installed heat pumps, to be green?

Yes, I think the house would have been absolutely stunning if we could see the original brickwork... But then I do love 17th century brickwork!

They were mysteriously digging huge holes in the overflow car park on my last visit. That must have been for the heat pumps. I wonder how well they will work?

Some day, a Kingston Lacy gardener is gonna really wish his/her predecessors had not planted bamboo!

But omyGOSH, those snowdrops! Flowering! In January!!

Heh! They have planted a lot of bamboo. Maybe there will be a small bamboo forest there some time in the future.

The snowdrops are only flowering in the Fernery, which is behind six-feet high brick walls, and sheltered from the frost. Not a snowdrop in sight yet out in the woods.

Only in the Fernery, which was built to shelter exotic ferns from the frost.

There's not a snowdrop in sight yet out in the parkland. Sensible snowdrops. It was very, very cold.

It's a lovely walk, around the park and through the woods, in winter.

I used to love riding my pony on the ditch banks in winter (when I was little. And didn't mind being in the cold for long lol)

I miss winter riding so much - the ponies' breath steaming, and the winter wind blowing whorls in their thick winter coats. The ring of hooves on icy ground...
