Fog & cobwebs, I never can resist photographing these...

Yes, two thousand years ago, when the fort was constructed, the ramparts would have been faced with timber, and the ditches much deeper. But erosion has taken its toll.

Even after two and a half millennia of wind and rain and sheep, it is still a very impressive construction. Back when it was built, it must have been shockingly intimidating.
