The surprise of initiativeness made me smile ( as did Gaudy Night when I re-read it last year though not at all in the same way.)
Could Max be gated away from the front door so he can't see the headlights, or would it be mean to remove one of his great interests in life in this way?
It has to be said, some of the biggest laughs in these series come from the gloriously unexpected subtitles rather than any comedy...
I'm reluctant to shut Max in the kitchen, even though he does actually spend most of the night there - he's always had free run of the house. I suppose I'll just have to put up with the early morning canine alarm calls until the days get longer!
