As to the furniture: My answering machine tells me I should make an appointment for the kitchen to be delivered next week. Let's see if I can manage or if it will have to wait till after the holidays...

How it will be fine when your new flat gets ready, eh? Makeshift living becomes annoying with time. I've experienced that more than once. How weird can people get? It seems canoeing is really typical for a staff's trip. I did not take part in it last time, but we had several accidents in the cold water, too.
Your colleagues seem to be reckless. What wonderful pictures you could have taken and sold to the pupils for the school magazine. HARRHARR.
Reminds me of my trip to Ireland - it was January and extremely apocalyptic weatherwise. We warmed up in a pub, too. Fortunately, EVERYONE there was soaking wet, so we did not have to hide in the back chamber.
