Chapter 5~Starting To Realize I Still Need You

“You can’t do this, Noah.”

He slams his locker and stares at it, trying to breath through his irritation. It’s Rachel talking to him, or rather talking him out of his decision. The decision being to talk to Kurt. It had been a month since the incident in the hall, and since then, Noah has only seen the pale boy a handful of times. And the word “seen” even being a stretch, as it was merely flashes. Kurt was giving him space, the
space he’d asked for. And Noah would be lying if he said he didn’t miss him with every fiber of his being.

In fact, every second Kurt isn’t beside him is painful. It feels like an arm or something is missing from his body. He just wanted to rewind to when Kurt would sneak in through his window and hold him close all through night, filling his brain with ideas of a happy ever after in New York or even Lima. Yeah, Kurt had even said he would stay in Lima to be close to their parents for their child if that’s what Noah wanted.

“But what about your dreams of Broadway and fashion, Kurt?”

“Who says I can’t start a clothing line here, and anyways I’ve said it now a million times, baby…you’re my dream. You and our little one.”

Noah wishes Kurt would have said it a few more million times, so that way when he ended up here…alone…he could imagine and fantasize about a coulda been. A coulda been filled with more children, a beautiful wedding, long passionate nights leaving him screaming his lovers name as loud as he could - because he knows that’s what Kurt liked as he drags his finger nails down his pale back…yeah. That coulda been, woulda been amazing. He would have stayed home and raised the munchkins, writing songs in his spare time, and played the role of wife so very happily. It’s what he’s always wanted anyway. A place in which he belongs, a role in which only he can fill. He thinks that may have hurt worse than when he found out about the affair - being reminded he didn’t belong anywhere. No one ever picks him, he should have known it would happen eventually.

But that wasn’t why he wanted to talk to his ex. Three days ago, Brittany and Quinn accompanied him to his monthly check-up, and the doctor told him the sex of their baby. A girl. They were having a girl. Just like Kurt had wanted. And Noah had been struck with the realization that the counter-tenor wasn’t there to see. Wasn’t the one holding his hand being a proud father. Wasn’t crying happy tears over the print out the lady handed him. Wasn’t looking at him like he was the most amazing boy in the world because he’d given Kurt a reason to do those things…and he didn’t like it.

Not because he wanted the pale teen back. (Even though he knew he really did.) But because he felt like he was cheating his daughter out of a full life by not allowing her other daddy to be a part of it because his heart got broken. It wasn’t fair to her. And she was his only priority. The rest of his life didn’t matter. She was the only reason he still got up in the morning.

Sighing before turning, not looking her directly in the eyes, Noah says, “I have to, Rachel. She deserves both fathers.” Then starts
walking toward the exit as school was over.

“She deserves a father that loves her other father,” she countered, following him.

“This isn’t about me. This is about her. Whether or not Kurt lied to me and broke my heart doesn’t change that this,” he puts a hand on his rather large belly, “is his. He has the right to be a good dad.”

She scoffs, “He also had the right to be a good boyfriend, which by extension meant being a good father as his boyfriend was carrying his child in which he wanted to be a good father to.” They stop and Noah looks at her confused. “You see it all works together.”

He shakes his head, “No, most of that I didn’t understand.” Starting to walk again, he adds, “My decision is final, Rachel. I appreciate you being concerned for me; but even Ma thinks it’s time I figure out what the future holds for her. If Kurt doesn’t wanna be involved, well, that’s a different conversation altogether.” And he really hoped it wasn’t one he’s be forced to sit through, as he’s pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to and still be alive by the end of it. The thought of Kurt not wanting them - no - her, he corrects himself, really does him in.

Rachel makes a noise, whether from agreement of annoyance he isn’t sure, but she doesn’t badger him anymore on the way to the car. Once he’s securely inside Mike’s truck, as he his belly prevented such things driving from his able to do list in the middle of his fifth month, she made one final statement.

“I love you, Noah. No matter what, okay?”

He nods and she pulls away, leaving Noah feeling…he doesn’t know what to call it exactly, stronger maybe?

“What going on?” Mike asks after few minutes of silence pass between them.

“I’m going to talk to Kurt.”

No use in beating around the bush. Rachel would tell him anyway.

Mike stays silent and Noah doesn’t push. Although he is interested in knowing what his friend’s thoughts are. It isn’t until they get in front of his house and his driver hasn’t moved to help him out as per usual that the tall teen finally speaks.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea.”

Honestly? He looks towards Mike’s profile and thinks on that. Mike isn’t a demanding person, unlike Rachel. He lets people make their own mistakes and advises where he can. But he’s also fiercely loyal. So if that mistake someone he loves makes ends in someone he loves getting hurt…well then he isn’t so passive.

“Truthfully Mike, no I don’t.”

“Okay,” he says neutrally. Waiting for Puck to continue.

“But our baby girl deserves two parents right? I mean, she’d hate me later if I told her she didn’t have her other daddy because he broke my heart and I wouldn’t let him see her.”

“Maybe,” he agrees. “But maybe she might hate Kurt for hurting you if you let him back in.”

“I’m not letting him back in,” Noah replied. “This isn’t for me.”

Eyebrows rose, “Maybe not consciously. I have no doubt, Puck, that what you want revolves around your little girl. What I doubt is your ability to cope with the feelings you have stored up. All things considered, you’ve handled things fairly well. But you still love Kurt. And letting him back in so soon, in any capacity, will cloud your judgment. And hey, maybe you want it be. I don’t know. But just…promise me you’ll think about it some more. Think about what it is you specifically want from Kurt so there are clear boundaries and you can control where things progress from there.”

Considering that, Puck thought Mike may be right. Damn, he needed to talk to this kid more often. “Yeah, okay. I will.”

Mike lets a breath of air and opens his car door heading for Noah’s. Once they were inside and Mike was sure Mercedes was on her way with a new movie in hand, Mike left. And Noah was left wondering what his boundaries should be. Since really, he wanted Kurt back in all ways.
