The problem with the death penalty is that it is a way to mitigate vengeance, pure and simple, and the detractor you posted below agrees with me, even though they may not use the same words. The reason why justice and retribution is left in the hands of the government is so that the disturbance to society can be minimized in view of unformed, unchecked retributive action. As David Milch said in an interview, you kill my horse; I go and kill your horse, your family, and then you. The disturbance, in this case, would be the loss of the person's labor, whether unskilled, or specialized, and the breakdown of their social network. I think that if we called the death penalty what it is, vengeance, and recognize that it's a base impulse, less people would be for it
