In Brazil we don't usually count words, but most dissertations have between 120-150 pages, which is probably about 30,000-40,000 words. I think mine will have more than 40,000 words, but yes, 80,000 is probably an exaggeration.
It's funny, actually--in American journalism and publishing, people count words, but in academia it tends to be pages. Personally I sort of like to use word counts, but I'm weird. ;-)
Here they usually ask for a thesis for one's masters, and it'd usually be forty to sixty pages. I suppose that's why you call them dissertations; they only ask for a diss here for the doctorate. I am very impressed, even if it is less than 80,000 words. ;-)
Oh, how funny, it's the opposite here: we write Master's dissertations and doctoral theses! I'll post about that on my LJ and try to clarify things a bit.
