Roundup Meme (Fics Meme) 2007

Dec 30, 2007 07:47

Every end of the year I post this meme. You can read the 2004, 2005 and 2006 versions here (LJ) or here (IJ) (scroll down).

I didn't write many fics this year, for many reasons (but I've written an original story and translated it into English. The story is still being betaed/edited).

Stories I wrote (and posted):

Puffapod (Snape/Harry, for the Read more... )

I do like this meme. It's a good one to do. I'll be posting mine on New Year's Eve.

I too find it a little disappointing when stories that I've either worked extra hard on or I think are maybe better than others don't get as many comments as some others.

:D

In the lj/ij corner of HP fandom, short fics tend to get more feedback than long ones, generally speaking. I suppose that happens because short fics get more readers than long fics (people don't have much time to read). That's OK, but it's sad for us fic writers who work hard to write a longer story.

I think that it pretty much the same in all fandoms. And I know that I'm as 'guilty' in my non-Gibbs/Ducky fandoms as everyone else.

I'll read the shorter story there and then on my toddle around LJ and then I'll leave feedback. And I intend (really, I do) to return to read the longer ones, but . . .

Certainly my longer stories can end up getting less feedback than my shorter ones.

Plus I know that timing is a factor too, i.e. when you post. I try not to post at a weekend or holiday time, but you can't always do that. And when people are mid-ficathon again, they often read their story and intend to get back to others, but . . .

And given that I'm retired and have a lot of time on my hands and I can't find the time sometimes *sigh* I can understand other people.

And I know that a lot of people read but don't comment. And again that tends more often to be on the longer piece, because they think that 'loved this', isn't enough on a 10,000+ story. (It is, really it is *wry grin*).

Oh, I can't complain: I try to give feedback every time I like a story, but I haven't read many fics this year. So I completely understand why things happen this way.

It's interesting what you said about the timing factor, because I always check my site stats, and weekends are the time when I get more visitors! Maybe people tend to go to authors' sites and archives on the weekends, but they read less on LJ?

I do love it when authors do a fic roundup. Over the course of a year (heck even six months) I forget what I have read and enjoyed. It is nice to get a reminder and go back and read things again. Sometimes I get a totally different reaction to a story.

Have a great day! My coffee is ready and I can finally warm up

This meme is great, both for readers and writers. It's good to think of what we could or couldn't do in the year that is ending and make a kind of annual report ;-)

Thank you, darling. I couldn't reply earlier because I was working. I hope you're having a nice Sunday.
