Things And Time

Mar 30, 2009 10:36

Time is a problem for a dabbler like me. When I want to do something, I want to do it well. I've learned enough to know that if I want to do it well, I need to do it regularly. There are only so many hours in the week, which means that if I want to do something, I need to not do something else. The problem is that I want to do everything. This ( Read more... )

Interesting. I have some of the same problems, but there some activities that don't fall into that pattern, including many physical activities. For example, you ski very well. Even though you only go a few times a year, within a few hours on the mountain, you can pretty much ski where you did last year. Improvement then starts from that point.

The problem is when skills degenerate when they're not used.

Wow. Now suddenly I'm rereading your post as part of a Greek tragedy where the hero's excellence proves his downfall.

The reason I asked is because I not infrequently catch myself striving to do well for idiotic reasons. I'm willing to believe that isn't the same problem for you as it is for me, though.

I try to avoid seeing myself as a tragic figure. But all jokes aside, that's exactly what can happen to me: I get too caught up in trying to do everything well, and fail at the stuff that's actually important to me.

And yes, I'm sure we have different idiotic reasons for doing things.

I have the same problem. Only my response is more deer in the headlights like. There is lots I want to do. But I can't do them all. So I do nothing. I'm trying to break myself of this... but damn, it's hard.
