I learned a new word from Beverly Cleary tonight....

Elder Flower is a smart one-- too smart, I sometimes think. I had decided a while ago to try and nudge her to reading more difficult books, and tonight's bedtime just seemed like a perfect time. She's been in a good mood, I had some time, and she picked a chapter book on her own until I mentioned it was a chapter book and we couldn't finish it in ( Read more... )

I ran across that word in a book as an adult as well, and had to look it up. i don't think it was Beverly Cleary though. I read many of he book as a chikd and I hope Elder enjoys this one. I sldo had to look up the word "bosky" not all that long ago. I thought it was a neat word and apparently so did the author as she used it at leasst three times in hte novel.

Isn't it great when they hit those milestones? I remember when I figured out my son was reading on his own: he started correcting me as I read aloud to him. Not books he'd memorized from hearing them over and over, but new books from the library.

And I *love* stories that teach me new words! Laurie King is good for that. The latest one I learned from her was sultana, a type of raisin.

My Blossoms just amaze me with the things they do. We just went and got their library cards so that we can read more!

What Laurie King would you recommend?

I like the Holmes/Russell series best; the first book is The Beekeeper's Apprentice. King writes some contemporary fiction too, but this series is my favorite.
