I really like this take on why he leaves her behind. Yes, he's doing what he thinks is best for her, but it takes on larger implications than a more mundane approach of--she'll lead a happier life, normal life, etc.

The whole thing is lovely.

This fic was prompted by a number of things--two of which were some of the discrepancies in the canon, which I use as the "lies" and having read a series of comments somewhere else (site forgotten now) where someone talked about the belief of Ten's fundamental insecurity in his worth vis a vie Rose. So while it could be argued that he "sacrifices" his feelings for her to "facilitate" a better life for her, it could also be argued that he attempts to save her from the darkness in himself, or jettisons her to avoid future distractions, etc.

It was a fun idea to play with, because he really can be a jerk sometimes and it's fun to put a little tarnish on that "martyr" patina he wears. And while it's true that people and what motivates them are complicated, for Timelords it must be doubly so...
