it's not even January yet, and already I'm Trying New Things

Dec 18, 2008 21:00

I alternately want to laugh with and at one of my students, who failed my class last trimester and is right back in it, and alternately is super proud of himself for knowing all the answers (uh, 'bout time?) and complains about how he's "already DONE this, GOD" and doesn't feel like he should have to repeat work. Uh, kid? You shouldn't have to ( Read more... )

I like the True Blood series. I'm in love with one of the characters who shows up in book 4. I got hooked with the show and then the books. I'm right now on book 6.

1) I go to a yoga/pilates mix and I really miss it and I haven't been for like a month between the holidays and the freaking bronchitis.

2) I would like to try that melon. I am a terribly picky eater, but I am not scared of fruit. Mostly. ALSO Gala apples are the best.

3) True Story: I read the handmaid's tale when I was like 13 because, and ONLY because my sister was reading it for school and kept leaving it in the bathroom, providing both of us with reading material.

4) Spoon River may be my fave poetry collection ever, but I think you would enjoy Marilyn Nelson's work as well, as it is frequently quite funny, and she herself does a great reading.

5) I also need to get my ass back to the gym and need some new music mixes BUT! See also: freaking bronchitis. *Grumble* I am on a Christmas music group on livejournal where people share (TOTALLY LEGAL WHAT WHAT I DENY EVERYTHING) fave holiday mp3s. Someone should do that for workout music.

Your new plan to subvert the composure of young men with angst inducing sports novels is two things, in equal measure:
1.) Brilliant
2.) Completely repugnant to me.

I approve.

I'll have to check out Coe Booth. I haven't actually read Brother Torres myself, because I brought two ARCs home from last year's NCTE and they were immediately STOLED (uh, i mean... borrowed) and have been circulating among the students pretty regularly ever since.

There are lots of male protagonists, but I feel like mostly in types of stories my students won't read (Huck Finn, Lord of the Flies, A Separate Peace?? Not happening, even though I offer all three on my shelves). I also feel like 90% of YA lit has female protags, although that's based only on what I see offered at NCTE/bookstores. I want to check out "Fat Kid" and the Pratchett (although the one TP book I tried to read I didn't like much).

Also: WALTER DEAN MYERS OMG. And Sharon Draper!

I pretty much love everything Terry Pratchett. At least the adult stuff, I haven't tried his YA stuff.
