Final couple of days before I emigrate south to start the new job on Tuesday. Had to go and buy a suit on saturday and spent today looking for shirts. Apparently. I'm thick necked (who could tell)which means getting the biggest neck size available. Normally this isn't a problem but since I have to wear a tie I need to do the top button up. hey ho! Thick necked is better than no-necked, which is what I basically am.

BLOODY HECK!
I've had to buy 19.5" in the past but I know they go up to at least a 22 ... and a 20 on me is A MASSIVE TENT :-)

I'm now able to get by with an 18 or 18.5 from Tesco/Asda/wherever so that means I can buy very inexpensive shirts (two for less than ten quid!)

My foster father has the same problem he has a massive neck and shoulders from playing as a hooker in his younger days....that's a position in rugby before there are any smart comments...lol

the biggest I can find cheap is 18 in Asda which is just doable. any bigger then I need to look at getting them taken in. 18 is ok 18.5 is preferable. Normally I don't do them up unless i'm being very formal but since suit and ties are expected....:-(

saying that even the nice gentleman's outfitter I got my suit from only went up to a size 18 neck! tesco and Asda in york are the same!

Strange, the Tesco in Bar Hill (Cambridge/Ely) had shirts up to 18.5.

And it gets a lot more expensive when you start buying "good" shirts. I've recently bought a few Van Heusen, because the store at Waterloo BR station was closing down, and even then they were averaging over £20 (as opposed to their pre-closing down sale which had reduced them to £35 or £50 with a tie!), and the replacement shop (T.M.Lewins) had a sale in January/February at £25 each for shirts normally £37.50-£85 (eek!).

The thing is, if you go for nice plain solid colours (like white, light blue etc.) then you can have a small stock and good shirts stand up to frequent washing. Have a few spare "cheap" from Asda/Tesco and you're covered :-)

One of the contractors at a previous company had at least five suits as he'd wear a suit ONCE and then get it dry cleaned, so it was a clean suit every day. Personally I think that's weird!

Good luck with the new job!

Does it feel a bit like the whole being fitted out with uniform before the first day at school thing?
